The $19 Egg Cooker I Didn't Need (But Absolutely Love)
Sometimes the little conveniences really are worth it.
I'm a big believer in using what you've got, making do, and not buying gadgets just because somebody decided we need another appliance cluttering up the kitchen.
And then my dad gave me a $19 egg cooker.
Do I need an egg cooker? Absolutely not.
I own pots. I have a stove. I've been boiling eggs successfully for decades.
But am I ridiculously happy with this little contraption? Heck yeah!
It's one of those DASH egg cookers that sits on the counter looking a bit like a miniature spaceship. You add water, put your eggs inside, push the button, and let the little machine do its thing.
And it makes GREAT hard-boiled eggs.
Apparently, it'll make omelets, too. Because why stop at boiling eggs when you can give a tiny kitchen appliance ambitions?
The real test was the trip home
I got this little gadget from my dad while I was visiting him, and we brought it along on our trip back home.
And here's where it earned its keep.
We used it right in our hotel room to make hard-boiled eggs for lunch.
No hunting down somewhere to eat. No expensive restaurant lunch. Just a few eggs, a little appliance, and a simple meal.
That's my kind of travel hack.
It's small enough to tuck into our travel things, doesn't require a whole kitchen, and makes something that's actually useful to have on hand.
Not everything needs to be homemade the hard way
Sometimes I think people get the wrong idea about homesteading.
Like we should all be chopping wood, hauling water, and refusing to use electricity if there's a perfectly good old-fashioned way of doing something.
No thank you.
I'm all for knowing how to do things yourself. But I'm also a fan of making life easier when the opportunity presents itself.
Could I boil eggs in a saucepan? Of course.
Do I love that this little gadget makes them without having to stand over a stove? You bet.
And for $19, it's one of those little conveniences that makes me smile every time I use it.
A little bit of homesteading wisdom
You don't have to do everything the hard way to live a simpler life.
Sometimes simple living means growing your own food. Sometimes it's baking bread from scratch. And sometimes it's plugging in a tiny egg cooker in a hotel room so you've got lunch without spending a fortune or resorting to junk food.
I'm keeping this one.
And I'm pretty sure Dad knew exactly what he was doing when he gave it to me.
We were making breakfast - and I commented hey this is super cool - next thing I knew Amazon was pulling up at the door with one for me.
Have you ever gotten a little gadget you thought was completely unnecessary, only to discover you absolutely loved it? Tell me about it. I'm always curious what earns its place in somebody else's kitchen.
Use what you've got. Grow what you can. Make a life you love.
