Welcome to Hobo Homesteading
Hobo Homesteading began with a simple belief: you do not need a perfect farmhouse, forty acres, expensive equipment, or a pantry worthy of a magazine spread to create a more grounded and satisfying life.
You can begin with what you already have.
You can bake a loaf of bread in an ordinary kitchen. You can grow herbs on a windowsill, make soap without owning a goat, mend something instead of replacing it, or preserve the handful of fruit that survived an unexpected frost.
You can notice the seasons, learn practical skills, laugh at the animals, and discover a little everyday magic along the way.
Martha Stewart I am not. Around here, things sometimes flop, animals refuse to cooperate, and the garden has its own ideas. But something does not have to be perfect to be useful, beautiful, or worth doing.
That is really the heart of Hobo Homesteading.
This is homesteading for real life
Hobo Homesteading is for people who want to feel more capable, creative, and connected to the lives they are already living.
You may have a garden, a few chickens, a kitchen full of projects, or absolutely none of those things yet. You may live in the country, the suburbs, an apartment, or an RV. The point is not to recreate someone else’s version of a homestead.
The point is to create a life that feels more like your own.
Here you will find simple projects, from-scratch recipes, beginner-friendly growing ideas, stories from life with goats, chickens, geese, rabbits, bees, dogs, and one very opinionated llama named Larry.
You will also find conversations about simple living, seasonal rhythms, homeschooling, making do, and recognizing the sacred in ordinary things.
Choose your own path
Hobo Homesteading has grown into a few different spaces, depending on what you are looking for.
Read the stories and learn the skills
The Hobo Homesteading Substack is where I share new stories, practical projects, recipes, monthly how-to guides, and our explorations of simple living and everyday magic.
That is the best place to follow along and become part of the community.
Visit the General Store
The Hobo Homesteading General Store is filled with useful, funny, and slightly unconventional things inspired by homestead life, animals, making do, and people who would rather create a life than simply consume one.
Browse my helpful resources
I have also gathered my favorite tools, supplies, and practical recommendations into Homestead Resources.
These growing lists are designed to help you find what you need for projects like bread baking, soapmaking, gardening, preserving, and other homesteading adventures without spending hours sorting through endless options.
You are already allowed to begin
You do not need to wait until you know more, own more, or have the perfect setup.
Start with the bowl in your cupboard, the patch of sunlight by the window, the seeds someone gave you, or the skill you have always wanted to learn.
Use what you’ve got.
Grow what you can.
Make a life you love.
Welcome to Hobo Homesteading. I think you’re going to fit right in.
